Pioneers: Sisters Ancy A, Apoline Pais, Cecilia Saldanha, Anita Pinto, Gracy Veigas, Jenny D’Sa, Veronica Gonsalves and Sr Veena Goretti

Roshni Teachers’ Quarters, a second establishment of the Mangalore Province, was started on August 28, 2008. It was situated 0.5 kilometres away from Roshni Convent. The Sisters involved in social work at Hangal realized the necessity of beginning an English medium school in the place. The request  was put forth by people of the locality. Hence a three-acre land was purchased and a building was put up, which they named Roshni Teachers’ Quarters. The sections of LKG, UKG and Class I, which were functioning at Roshni thus far, were now shifted to the new building and the Sisters from Roshni were commuting there daily. Meanwhile, they added a classroom each year until the building was complete in 2008. The three storied school building not only became known for its quality education but also served as a landmark of Hangal. As the number of students increased, for a fruitful ministry it was felt necessary that the Sisters reside in the school campus. Accordingly on August 28, 2008 eight Sisters began residing at the new place occupying three rooms of the school building. Roshni Teachers’ Quarters was formed into a sub-community under the charge of Roshni Convent.

Functioning in the region of Hangal with one’s apostolic demands is challenging indeed. Divine involvement supports the Sisters through human means. St Lawerence parish came to be established in the year 2002. The Sisters now collaborate in the pastoral activities of the parish. They undertake sacristy work, assist in liturgy and visit families of Catholics and other faith. Besides, they visit families of their students irrespective of religion. This has strengthened the bond between the Sisters and the people.

The educational apostolate of the Sisters at Hangal is well coordinated under the animation of Sr Linet D’Souza. The staff, consisting of Sisters, Catholic lay teachers, Hindu and Muslim teachers alike, strives to give the best to the students and aims at bringing the best out of them. Apart from imparting knowledge, they also unravel the innate potentials of students and encourage them to grow in it. They are trained to be emotionally balanced, intellectually alert, morally sound, spiritually oriented, socially committed, and culturally enriched!!! In order to foster active collaboration in building up the institute and academic progress  of students, programmes such as Parent-Teacher Association, and Open Day are arranged. The Roshni Primary School was upgraded to High School on June 1, 2010. It was an auspicious day when viewed from the perspective of enlightenment a school can bring about in nearly 700 pupils. The school children compete in all activities at all levels and win laurels to the School.

Roshni Teachers’ Quarters has been canonically erected on August 6, 2013 by Sr Doreen D’Souza, Superior General. It is said that extra privileges carry with them added responsibilities. As Hangal is a good ground for service with love to all, irrespective of religion, it is to be expected that the teaching apostolate at Hangal uplifts the lowly, offers hope to those in despair and unites everyone into one human family. The Roshni Teachers’ Quarters was named ‘Kripa Sadan’ on August 6, 2013.
