Mother Rose Saldanha, an able and loving Superior, guided the destiny of the Ursuline Congregation for fifteen years, until 1945. With wisdom, dedication, and deep concern for the growth and well-being of the Congregation, she worked tirelessly during a significant period of its development. Together with Mother Mary Agnes Mathias, she persistently pursued the process of obtaining Canonical Approbation, laying the foundations for the Congregation’s formal recognition and further growth.
At the General Chapter held in 1945, Mother Mary Agnes Mathias was elected as the First Superior General of the Congregation. She assumed this responsibility at a crucial stage in its history and continued to lead the Congregation with courage, faith, and determination until her death in 1955.
Her years of leadership were marked by numerous challenges and hurdles, yet she faced them with steadfastness and a deep commitment to the mission and charism of the Ursulines. Her dedicated service and pioneering leadership contributed significantly to strengthening the Congregation and guiding it towards a more established and secure future.
She remains as an example of courage and strength to the leaders of our Congregation. Having convinced of her mission she worked zealously for the growth of the institute. The Congregation owes her a lot and salutes her for her undaunted spirit in all the spheres of life.
